Gaggia – The Unmistakable Aroma Of True Italian Espresso
Giovanni Achille Gaggia was born in 1895, in Milan, northern Italy. He became a café bar owner but was not satisfied with the flavour of the coffee coming from the espresso machine in his bar. Steam from the machine’s boiler scalded the coffee and made it taste bitter.
After extensive work with espresso machine design, Achille Gaggia pioneered the spring-lever brewing system. Without this type of pumped brewing system we would not have the, crema topped espresso coffee as we know it today!
In 1947 Achille Gaggia filed two patents for the brewing system (for a new boiler design and the spring-lever brewing group) which was, perhaps the single biggest development of all time in espresso coffee brewing.
The system’s accurate control of brewing temperature and pressure meant that the coffee was made faster with a more intense flavour and aroma.
Many large and prominent bars in Milan, such as Motta and Biffi in the Galeria, adopted Gaggia’s 'Caffe crema di caffe naturale' system.
In 1952 Gaggia set up the factory in Robecco sul Naviglio, Milan to build espresso machines. Their machines were exported all over the world to start a revolution with this new true espresso coffee.
Achille Gaggia died in 1961 leaving behind the legacy of the now, world famous Gaggia brand, synonymous with quality Italian coffee.
For over 60 years Gaggia has been filling bars and homes in every corner of the globe with the unmistakable aroma of true Italian espresso.
